Masking hides parts of a layer so you can edit only the areas you want to see. A layer mask sits on the layer and you paint with black to hide areas, white to reveal them, and gray for partial visibility. This keeps edits non-destructive because the original pixels stay intact and you can adjust or remove the mask later to change what’s shown. It’s useful for isolating a subject, protecting the background, or applying adjustments only to the visible portions. The healing tool, by contrast, is used to blend pixels to remove imperfections, not to hide parts of a layer. PSD and JPEG are file formats, not techniques for selectively hiding and editing portions.
